KUALA LUMPUR (June 18): Serai Group founders Rina Abdullah and son-in-law Najib Hamid opened Meet Bros Steakhouse in London on May 12. This joint venture with home-grown restaurant chain Me’nate Steak Hub, owned by Palace Butcher Resources, is something Rina never imagined when she first set up Serai Thai in Shah Alam 33 years ago. Then, it was a “hobby” while she cared for her young children, after her hotelier husband relocated to Terengganu for work.

When Najib came into the family, the chemistry between them led to new brands, concepts and cuisines under the company. Everyone in the family plays a role in the business, which has expanded in new directions. What remains constant is the taste of their food, which customers like, remember and keep going back for more. Rina — daughter Qistina says she is blessed with “exceptional tasting memory” — takes care of that by listening to feedback from clients.

When you love chocolate, working with a company that produces it must be a dream job. Meet Robert Kotuszewski, Barry Callebaut’s managing director for Malaysia. The Zurich-based gourmet chocolate maker just launched the world’s first 100% dairy-free vegan, plant-based, allergen-free chocolate.

The Chanel-Dakar 2022/23 Métier d’art show in Tokyo brought together different arts and collaborations. Filled with the spirit of Dakar, where it was created, the recent event continued to bring Seventies vibe and Senegalese style to the fore through fashion and respectful dialogue. Stars and singers from West and East performed and mingled at Tokyo Big Sight. From the stage, they took to the dance floor at the after-party, whipping up a celebratory energy that was infectious.
