KUALA LUMPUR (May 19): Dr Zhao Ning, the billionaire co-founder of Shanghai- and Hong Kong-listed pharmaceutical research firm WuXi AppTec, passed away at the age of 56 after battling cancer for 20 years.
In an obituary posted on its website, WuXi AppTec said Dr Zhao, who is also executive director of the board and corporate senior vice-president of WuXi AppTec, passed away on May 16.
The company said she obtained her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Peking University, doctoral degree in organic chemistry from Columbia University and then began her career with top organisations, advancing through the ranks of research and management.
“During her long battle against cancer, Dr Zhao’s strong sense of purpose led to her tireless global philanthropic efforts to support cancer research and foster future leaders so new treatments and cures will benefit patients around the world,” it said.
WuXi AppTec’s partners include multinational Johnson & Johnson and US-based biotechnology company Wugen Inc.
