KUALA LUMPUR (April 27): Supermax Corp Bhd announced the resignation of independent non-executive director Sharon Sung Fong Fui, due to the latter’s personal commitments and rising workload in another public-listed company.

Sung, who was appointed to Supermax's board in December 2021, is also chief financial officer and executive director at Padini Holdings Bhd.

In a statement on Thursday (April 27), Supermax said Sung will continue to serve on its board of directors until June 30 this year.

“She has been an integral part of the company's board, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic period when she joined, and her contributions to the company will not be forgotten,” said Supermax.

Last week, Supermax's non-executive director Cecile Jaclyn Thai, who is also the eldest daughter of executive chairman Datuk Seri Stanley Thai, resigned over disagreements with the board.

In her resignation letter that was sighted by The Edge, Cecile claimed she was 'bullied and silenced' by other board members, including her father, while trying to uphold her fiduciary duties. Supermax subsequently refuted her claims.

Following Sung's departure, Supermax said it will review and reshuffle its boardroom to align with Supermax’s global strategy and forward direction.

“The board will initiate a search for a replacement candidate who will play a part in enhancing that role. Further announcements will be made once a new member has been appointed,” it said.

“The board would like to take this opportunity to reassure its stakeholders that Ms Sung’s resignation will not have any adverse impact on the company's operations. The company remains committed to its mission and will continue to work tirelessly towards achieving its objectives,” it added.

Supermax shares closed one sen or 1.2% lower at 85 sen on Thursday, giving it a market capitalisation of RM2.31 billion.
