6.30pm: BN component parties gather at WTCKL for GE15 results viewing

Supporters and Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition members have gathered at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (previously known as Putra World Trade Centre), where Umno headquarters is located, ahead of the GE15 results viewing session on Saturday (Nov 19) night.

In the last GE14 in 2018, the Dewan Tun Hussein Onn in PWTC was pretty much left deserted by BN supporters halfway through the results viewing session, when it became apparent that the incumbent was being ousted from Putrajaya by Pakatan Harapan (PH) — the first time in BN's history.

BN won just 79 parliament seats on GE14, down from 133 in GE13. Following a series of party-hopping when it was the opposition, it was left with 43 seats (excluding one vacant seat due to the passing of Gerik MP Datuk Hasbullah Osman) by the time the Parliament was dissolved on Oct 10 this year.

Since GE14, BN has won several by-elections, including the Tanjung Piai by-election in Johor which saw MCA retaking the seat from Bersatu. Its last election tally was in the Johor state election in March 2022, where it won 40 of 52 seats amid a voter turnout of 54.92%.

In its bid to reclaim Putrajaya, BN — led by its chairman and former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi — is contesting 179 parliament seats in GE15, down from all 222 seats in GE14 in 2018. It did not contest all 31 seats in Sarawak and contested just 13 out of 25 seats in Sabah.

As of 4pm on Saturday, the GE15 voter turnout is at 70% or 14.82 million out of the 21.17 million registered voters, according to the Election Commission (EC). Polling officially ended at 5.30pm in Sabah and Sarawak and 6pm in Peninsular Malaysia.
