KUALA LUMPUR (May 18): The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said the decision to declassify the auditor-general (AG)'s report on troubled strategic investment fund 1Malaysia Development Bhd, which has been classified under the Official Secrets Act, will be up to the cabinet.
"Regarding the classified audit report on 1MDB, it is up to the government to make it public. Whether it will be declassified or not, it will be up to the cabinet of ministers," said PAC chairman Datuk Hasan Arifin.
He said this at a press conference held in conjunction with the release of the AG's Report 2015 Series 1, which was tabled in Dewan Rakyat today.
He praised the fast delivery of the report, noting it is unusual for the report to be released this early.
"The AG has tabled the report in Parliament, and it is a big achievement that the report was released earlier than anticipated. Normally, it would be challenging for the report to be prepared before June. This shows that we have a good reporting system in place, along with good management of accounts," said Hasan.
Overall, he said the federal government did well last year, but said a few items will need a closer look. He said the PAC will be calling up three bodies for further clarification for the next PAC proceeding.
These agencies and departments include the Immigration Department with regards to the implementation of the Malaysian Immigration System (myIMMs), the Sabah Water Department with regards to the rural water supply programme; and the Natual Disaster Management Agency, relating to the management of the houses of flood victims.
