Recently, Tudor and leading watch retailer Swiss Watch, owned by the Valiram Group, partnered yet again to open a new boutique at premier lifestyle retail destination 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya. This free-standing space, positioned attractively in the centre court of the mall’s new wing, is the ninth such boutique following the opening of similar boutiques in Pavilion KL, Genting SkyAvenue, Gurney Paragon, Johor Premium Outlets, KLIA, klia2, Jesselton Mall and Resorts World Sentosa.
However, this opening is especially meaningful because 1 Utama is very much a suburban, neighbourhood mall, which reaffirms the Valiram Group’s faith in the local luxury market. “As the leading home-grown luxury watch retailer, Swiss Watch has been committed to stimulating the market with novelty and excitement since inception 20 years ago,” says its group executive director Mukesh Valiram. “Opening the Tudor boutique at 1 Utama reinforces our commitment to bringing the shopping experience of local luxury watch buyers to the next level. We are confident that our long-standing relationship with Tudor will enable us to showcase their watches and stories in the most authentic and engaging way possible.
“We are continuously looking to empower the local luxury watch community through different initiatives. We are the only retailer in Malaysia that has consistently organised yearly luxury timepiece exhibitions, like Art of Time and Time Kulture. While we are flexing our muscles as a specialist retailer, we also believe in working with local ambassadors like Datuk Nicol David and Datuk Jimmy Choo and, most recently, Anniketyni Madian and Nor Tijan Firdaus to bring ‘time’ to life with their individual interpretations of time through their work and craft.”
The 1 Utama boutique opening was held on the evening of May 24 about 300 guests in attendance. Kicking off the festivities was international host Cay Kuijpers, who welcomed the guests. World-renowned, multi-award winning percussion ensemble, Hands Percussion, stirred the excitement of the crowd with a seven-minute drum performance, followed by a 20-minute performance by Singaporean Tamil-English rapper Yung Raja, alongside DJ Luq Here.
As cocktails, mocktails and canapes flowed, guests wandered around the new boutique and even got to try on the 2022 novelties on display, which were unveiled at the recent Watches and Wonders fair in Geneva. These include picks from Tudor’s iconic Black Bay collection as well as a series of women’s watches in various case sizes.
Anchored by the brand’s iconic colours of black, red and white, the new boutique exudes a bold and distinctive character — a true reflection of the brand’s innovative timepieces. Elegantly furnished and designed with a range of materials used in a clean, streamlined and uncompromising manner, the space exudes a conducive environment for customers to truly experience Tudor.
Photos of two of its high-profile ambassadors, Jay Chou and David Beckham, are displayed prominently around the store and bright lightbox signages provide a visual experience, complementing the wide range of watches on display. There is also a comfortable lifestyle corner for customers to relax and view watches at their leisure. Warm, welcoming and experienced client advisers are on hand to guide customers on the key points and mechanical capabilities of every timepiece in the store.
“Designed with a blend of tradition and the future, the boutique seeks to immerse customers in a sophisticated environment as they discover the brand’s heritage, innovation and technical expertise,” says Mukesh. “We worked hand in hand with Tudor in providing an exceptional experience for our customers. The boutique’s open façade not only makes it easily accessible but also offers a generous view of the brand’s bold and distinctive character to clients new to the world of Tudor.”

In case you missed the 1 Utama opening, here is a glimpse of Tudor’s 2022 novelties worth marvelling at
Black Bay Chrono S&G
Since the presentation of the Oysterdate in 1970, the brand’s first chronograph, Tudor has been producing watches closely tied to the world of motor sport and, in parallel, refining its divers’ watches unveiled in 1954. Tudor’s Black Bay Chrono S&G model combines these traditions in a sport-chic chronograph, with contrasting sub-counters and a high-performance automatic manufacture calibre MT5813, with column wheel and vertical clutch.
Available in two versions — matte black or sunray satin-finish champagne — the dial includes two recessed sub-counters in contrasting the colours of champagne and matte black for optimum legibility. The sub-counters have a circular-grained finish and, inspired by the first generation of Tudor chronographs, feature a 45-minute counter and a date aperture positioned at six o’clock. The recognisable characteristics of the Black Bay are preserved in a steel-and-yellow gold case with a 41mm diameter. The design of the yellow gold pushers was inspired by the very first generation of Tudor chronographs, a fixed bezel in yellow gold with an insert in black anodised aluminium, with tachymetric scale completing the distinguished appearance of this sporty chronograph.
For the Black Bay Chrono S&G, Tudor has selected a black strap woven by Julien Faure, and is also available with a stainless steel-and-yellow gold bracelet inspired by the folding riveted bracelets made in the 1950s and 1960s. Entirely in keeping with the spirit of “1970s racing”, the Black Bay Chrono S&G offers another choice of bracelet: a bund in aged dark brown leather with ecru topstitching and a steel folding clasp.
Black Bay GMT S&G
A model with multiple time zones, the Black Bay GMT S&G is a highly functional watch that establishes local time without losing sight of two other time zones. Recognisable by its 24-hour graduated rotating bezel with two colours, representing day and night, this watch also gives a subtle nod to the history of this watchmaking function.
The reference time is indicated by an angular “Snowflake” hand, an aesthetic hallmark of TUDOR, which completes a lap of the dial every 24 hours. Local time is indicated by another, shorter “Snowflake” hand set by a jumping hour, which can be moved either backwards or forwards. The date, displayed through an aperture positioned at three o’clock, is connected to the local time hand so that, when setting the time and passing midnight in retrograde, it instantly jumps to the previous day. The 24-hour graduated bidirectional rotating bezel and “24-hour” hand mean you can also keep track of a third time zone. On the anodised aluminium disc of the bezel, the graduations for the 12 daylight hours are gold-coloured on the brown section, with the night-time hours on the black section.
Together with its non-magnetic silicon balance spring, the Manufacture Calibre MT5652 is certified as a chronometer by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), with its performance going beyond the standards set by this independent institute. In fact, where COSC allows an average variation in the daily running of a watch of between -4 and +6 seconds in relation to absolute time in a single movement, Tudor insists on a variation of between -2 and +4 seconds in its running when assembled.
The Black Bay GMT S&G is completed by the choice of a Julien Faure beige band, stainless steel-and-yellow gold bracelet or brown leather strap with light top-stitching and a folding clasp.
Black Bay Pro
Tudor’s Black Bay Pro is an entirely new model with a dual time zone feature, a technical complication that establishes local time without losing sight of another time zone. Compact, robust and sporty, this model boasts many unique aesthetic details and celebrates the spirit of the technical watches that Tudor has produced for professionals throughout its history. Recognisable by its 24-hour graduated satin-brushed fixed bezel and its orange 24-hour “Snowflake” hand, Black Bay Pro is powered by the manufacture calibre MT5652 with built-in GMT function.
While this model is part of the Black Bay line, it introduces many new and unique aesthetic details, starting with its winding crown, which has been entirely redesigned for maximum grip. Reminiscent of the curves found on the crowns of the brand’s historical technical watches, this new component is set flush to the middle case band so that its tube is not visible. In another new feature, the applied hour markers on the dial are made from monobloc luminous ceramic. This feature enhances the technical aesthetic of Black Bay Pro while increasing considerably the luminous surface of the hour markers. A new bracelet clasp with a Tudor “T-fit” rapid size-adjustment system completes the list of innovations included in this model. Easy to use, requiring no tools and offering five positions, the “T-fit” system allows the wearer to carry out a fine, instant adjustment of up to 8mm on the clasp.
On the Black Bay Pro model, the reference time is indicated by an angular orange “Snowflake” hand, an aesthetic hallmark of Tudor, which completes a lap of the dial every 24 hours. Local time is indicated by another, shorter “Snowflake” hand set by a jumping hour, which can be moved either backwards or forwards. The date, displayed through an aperture positioned at three o’clock, is coupled with the local time hand so that when setting the time and passing midnight in retrograde, it instantly jumps to the previous day — a highly unusual, sophisticated and particularly practical function for the user.
