As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms the global economy, the demand for skilled AI professionals continues to grow. With AI tools now used by more than one billion people worldwide, organisations across industries are seeking talent capable of turning AI technologies into real-world innovation and measurable impact.
Recognising this growing need, Sunway College launched its Diploma in Applied Artificial Intelligence, a future-focused programme designed to provide students with the technical expertise and practical experience needed to excel in the fast-evolving AI economy.
"Technology continues to advance, and AI is now becoming an integral part of everyday life, making it essential that we embrace it while teaching students to use it ethically and responsibly. By doing so, we can equip them with the skills and mindset to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven world," says Professor Teo Ee Sing, Managing Director of Sunway College.
The Diploma in Applied Artificial Intelligence combines core AI knowledge with practical learning, preparing students to apply emerging technologies to real-world challenges.
Covering areas such as machine learning, generative AI, natural language processing (NLP), cloud-based AI and intelligent systems, the programme introduces the development of applications such as chatbots, predictive tools and automated workflows.
Practical experience is built into the learning journey, with opportunities to design and deploy AI solutions using cloud platforms and industry tools. The programme also emphasises the responsible use of AI, including how to assess AI systems for accuracy, fairness and ethical considerations. Through a final-year project, students bring these skills together to develop an AI solution from data preparation through to deployment.
The learning experience extends beyond the classroom through internship opportunities at the Research Centre for Human-Machine Collaboration (HUMAC) at Sunway University. Students gain exposure to real-world AI applications, including 3D mapping and AI-powered detection systems used to assess the ripeness and harvest readiness of palm oil fruits.
The diploma also serves as the first step in a comprehensive AI education pathway, enabling students to progress to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Artificial Intelligence, followed by the Master in Artificial Intelligence at Sunway University.
Reinforcing its commitment to producing industry-ready graduates, Sunway College also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Open Technology Incubator, an organisation dedicated to nurturing companies that develop open source technologies, products, and services.
"Sunway College and Sunway University are among the best private institutions in ASEAN, with a strong commitment to ethics and sustainability. These are values we deeply believe in, making this collaboration a natural fit. Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and strategic mindset to stand out and build successful careers in the AI era," shares Professor Dave Harris, Advisor to the Open Technology Venture Fund.
The partnership will strengthen collaboration between academia and industry by creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, industry engagement, and innovation in emerging technologies. Students will also gain greater exposure to the open source ecosystem, developing an understanding of modern software development practices and the commercialisation of AI-driven technologies.
