Penang has always been renowned internationally for its robust semiconductor industry, George Town's status as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its delectable cuisine, and its talented artisans.

The uniqueness of Penang lies in its ability to intertwine its economic prowess with its rich history and heritage, making it a melting pot for the arts, culture, and wealth. That is why Penang serves as a strategic venue for international events that bring these elements together, such as the George Town Literary Festival which is fully organised and owned by Penang Institute.

HSBC is proud to once again be a partner and supporter of the Festival which is in its 15th iteration this year.

HSBC Malaysia CEO Dato' Omar Siddiq shared that Penang plays a pivotal role in HSBC's history, as it is in Penang that the Bank's first office was opened in 1884.

"Through Penang, we have grown and have been part of the fabric of Malaysian society for more than 140 years, serving the trading and wealth needs of our customers across generations and borders, connecting Malaysia to the wider world. Given our longevity and our commitment to the country, HSBC is cognisant of the significance of history and cultural heritage and the importance for its preservation."

"The Festival is a testament to Penang's ability to synergise its growing economy and wealth segment with its rich arts, culture and heritage, and that is why this event has proven to be an international success," he added.

The Festival is deeply appreciated by many of HSBC's customers, as it is also an avenue for them to partake in intellectual engagements, and provides an opportunity to engage with global voices and exchange ideas.

Aside from the Festival, HSBC has also supported other cultural initiatives in Penang. As part of its 140-year anniversary celebration in Malaysia last year, HSBC donated towards the Penang Heritage Trust's "Living Heritage Treasures of Penang Awards". The awards honour Penangites who are master artisans that are preserving essential skills for future generations. Additionally, the Bank has also played its part in preserving Penang's rich history and heritage. Back in 2007, HSBC also contributed towards the full restoration of the iconic Suffolk House, the first "Great House of Penang".

HSBC has curated multiple events that cater to the different lifestyle interests of its customers. Recently, the Bank held an appreciation night at Zepp Kuala Lumpur for its Premier customers where they were serenaded by Malaysia's best talents, including Sean Ghazi, Elvira Arul, Dasha Logan, Mae Elliessa, Ida Mariana, Tria Aziz and Izen Kong accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with Istana Budaya, the Ministry Of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Bobo KL.

For its Premier Elite customers, the Bank has organised appreciation dinners at local fine dining establishments that are helmed by Malaysian culinary talents who pride themselves on featuring the best of local ingredients, such as Akar Dining in Kuala Lumpur and Gēn Penang.

HSBC Malaysia Country Head of International Wealth and Premier Banking Linda Yip said, "We are seeing a shift in the wealth paradigm in Malaysia with affluent customers now spanning a wider range of generations and personas, with increasingly sophisticated needs and aspirations, including an affinity for the arts, culture, and preservation."

"We recognise that our customers in Penang and across Malaysia have a great appreciation for the arts, and they value our support for events such as the George Town Literary Festival. We will continue to put our customers at the heart of everything we do, serving not just their financial but also their lifestyle needs, in line with our ambition to be the leading international bank and wealth manager for our customers. We hope our customers enjoy the exceptional line-up of literary voices from around the world."

The Festival will feature a dynamic programme featuring panel discussions, readings, workshops, book launches, a film screening, and an exhibition that will bring together local and international writers, poets, and thinkers.

Titled "Urban Myths and Memories", the George Town Literary Festival will take place from 28-30 November 2025.
