Epsom College in Malaysia - A Leader In Education & Welfare
25 Mar 2024, 12:00 am

Epsom College in Malaysia ("Epsom") is proud to announce that it has been awarded the esteemed double Beacon status from the Council of British International Schools ("COBIS") in recognition of its excellence in providing the highest standards of 'Student Welfare' and 'Leadership in the School' globally. Out of COBIS' 450 members, Epsom is the first and only school in Malaysia, of only 6 schools worldwide, to be awarded the double Beacon Status, highlighting its commitment to excellence in education, innovation in teaching practices, and dedication to fostering a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for its students.

Headmaster Matthew Brown expressed his delight at this achievement, stating, "Receiving the double Beacon School status from COBIS is a tremendous and rare honour for Epsom. This has been achieved by only 5 other COBIS schools in the world. It reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire school community in providing an outstanding education that prepares our students for success in an ever-changing world."

Second Master, Avis Parker echoed this sentiment, stating, "This recognition validates our relentless pursuit of excellence in all aspects of our academic and co-curricular programmes. We are thrilled to be amongst a handful of schools worldwide to receive this prestigious status."

This year marks Epsom's 10th anniversary in Malaysia, showcasing its meaningful impact on the region's educational landscape. As the only sister school of Epsom College - the UK's Independent School of the Year 2022 (both as the Overall Winner, and as School of the Year for Student Wellbeing) - Epsom leverages nearly 200 years of heritage and excellence to provide the best British boarding school experience in Asia.

An Ecosystem for All-Round Excellence

Guided by its ethos of "British Tradition, Global Learning, Universal Success," Epsom is committed to offering exceptional academic, social and sporting opportunities to students in a safe and supportive living and learning environment. Epsom uniquely stands as the only integrated institution for academic excellence that seamlessly incorporates sports and music into its curriculum with its on-site academies.

A core tenet at Epsom is the importance of preparing students for the demands of the real world. Students engage in a wide array of extracurricular activities that add depth to their university applications and help to drive personal growth.

Epsom's collaboration with the Asia School of Business ("ASB") in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology ("MIT") - the top university in the world ranked by QS - is an example of one of the many initiatives undertaken by Epsom to inspire curiosity beyond the curriculum. This unique alliance with two of the world’s leading academic institutions has led to an extended curriculum that provides students with the opportunity to interact with global experts in their respective fields across various disciplines like business, economics, and computer science.

Alongside academics, Epsom provides their students with ample opportunities to develop and excel in their sporting and musical endeavours.

Launched in 2022 in collaboration with renowned tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou, the Mouratoglou Tennis Programme ("MTP") brings the Mouratoglou methodology - developed over 25 years and used to coach Grand-Slam winners like Serena Williams and Coco Gauff - to Asia for the first time. The MTP at Epsom has since developed top-ranked junior players, including the Women No. 10 player in Malaysia, who have set their sights on top global universities upon completion of their A-Levels. The MTP operates in an on-campus tennis complex that boasts 11 ITF-compliant tennis courts including the only indoor French red clay courts in Southeast Asia.

The ECM Golf Academy ("Academy") was launched in June 2023 featuring a 5-acre golf facility with a 30-bay driving range, indoor/outdoor teaching studios and putting and chipping greens with sand bunkers for high-performance golf training and coaching on the Epsom campus. In the 6 months since the Academy's inception, players have received top rankings in both local and international tournaments, including the US Kids Golf tournaments and qualifications for the 2024 European Championships, under the tutelage of their award-winning PGA professional coaches.

In September 2023, LALIGA - the top professional football division of the Spanish football league system - launched the LALIGA Academy Malaysia, the first in Asia with its home at Epsom. The first LALIGA Camps welcomed young players from across Asia for a week of training derived from the methodology that has produced some of the world's best football players, including Lionel Messi.

For those who are musically inclined, the ECM Music Academy will soon be added to the roster to provide a comprehensive education for musically gifted individuals, seamlessly integrating academic rigour with musical pursuits. Musically gifted students can look to develop their talents further and consider entry into the world’s top music conservatories.

Nurturing Future Leaders through Exceptional Pastoral Care

Living on campus, students become a part of a close-knit community - where they not only acquire essential life skills such as independence, communication and responsibility, but also leadership, teamwork and empathy - which are qualities that will turn them into future leaders with great character and values.

Students at Epsom benefit culturally from living alongside peers of more than 30 diverse nationalities, fostering a rich environment for cross-cultural exchange and understanding. Mirroring the bedrock of Epsom College UK, pastoral care is primarily rooted in the House system which enforces a sense of belonging and family values, combined with individualised guidance and support. This 'second home' environment is crucial for holistic development as it creates a safe space for students to focus and thrive, whilst building relationships with their peers that will last a lifetime.

"I think when you're in an environment where people believe in you as much as my teachers have, it's very hard not to thrive. To be in an environment like that is really helpful in terms of achieving goals." - Cazra G., Epsom Class of 2022, Practising Law at the University of Cambridge.

At Epsom, there's a place for every child. With a dedication to outstanding academics, expert pastoral care, and unique sports and music programmes, Epsom allows every student to explore their interests and realise their full potential.

Weekday Boarding for Malaysian Families

Epsom's Weekday Boarding Programme offers Malaysian families the flexibility to reap the benefits of boarding and enjoy precious time together on weekends. Students can enjoy the British boarding school experience on weekdays and return home to their loved ones at the end of their busy and engaging school week. In addition, parents value and appreciate the elimination of daily travel-to-school arrangements, costly after-school enrichment and concerns over lack of supervision at home. Available to students from Year 5 onwards, fees cover tuition, meals, accommodation and weekly transportation between the campus in Bandar Enstek and Kuala Lumpur.
