Exciting times in a vibrant economy that is innovating at pace! Digital investment under the Malaysia Digital (MD) strategic initiative skyrocketed by 125% in Q2 2025. And as of June 2025, 261 MD-approved companies have the potential to generate nearly 17,500 knowledge-based jobs in the country over the next five years. This acceleration is thrilling – powering Malaysia’s progress and indeed the region’s.

Foreseeing this trajectory of tech-powered innovation, a year ago, Amazon Web Services (AWS) made a bold commitment to Malaysia, stepping into the heart of Southeast Asia’s booming digital economy by launching the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region. This cluster of datacentres lets businesses run cloud services close to their users, which means faster performance, lower costs, and the ability to keep data within the country if required. And Malaysia isn’t just keeping pace with cloud technology—it’s racing ahead, becoming a hotbed for technology breakthroughs and digital growth that resonate across the region.

The launch of the AWS Region in Malaysia was about more than just infrastructure. It marked a pivotal moment in empowering local enterprises, startups, and public sector organisations to innovate faster and dream bigger. As we celebrate this remarkable first year, let’s look at how AWS has fuelled Malaysia’s accelerating digital transformation.

Malaysia is rapidly emerging as Southeast Asia’s next frontier for digital innovation, propelled by a dynamic blend of creativity, ambition, and technology. As we mark this anniversary, it’s clear that our investment in Malaysia has catalysed unprecedented growth and innovation. This AWS Region offers a comprehensive generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) toolkit to empower Malaysian innovators to build intelligent, regionally relevant, and secure AI-driven solutions that drive growth across industries.

This was the first AWS infrastructure Region in Malaysia and the 13th in Asia Pacific, joining Regions in Hong Kong, Hyderabad, Jakarta, Melbourne, Mumbai, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Mainland China, Bangkok, and Auckland. This Region plays a pivotal role in supporting the Malaysian government’s strategic Madani Economy Framework, which aims to improve the living standards of all Malaysians by 2030 while supporting innovation across Southeast Asia. The construction and operation of this Region is estimated to add approximately $12.1 billion (MYR 57.3 billion) to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and will support an average of more than 3,500 full-time equivalent jobs at external businesses annually through 2038. Over the past year, we’ve seen inspiring progress across a wide range of sectors, fuelled by our commitment to empowering Malaysian businesses and organisations through the latest cloud solutions, including Gen AI.

With organisations across startups, enterprises, and the public sector adopting AWS services in Malaysia, we’ve been privileged to support a diverse community dedicated to driving digital innovation on the cloud. Today, our AWS Region in Kuala Lumpur proudly offers over 200 fully featured services across compute, storage, networking, database, security, management, and developer tools.

Our customers’ successes are testament to the Malaysia Region’s transformative impact. KK SUPER MART, a leading convenience store chain, strategically embraced cloud-first agility by executing a complete migration from its traditional datacentre to AWS. This shift significantly enhanced its operational scalability, business resilience, and digital responsiveness. In healthcare retail, Big Caring Group, which owns Malaysia’s largest pharmacy chain, has gained greater flexibility and scalability through RISE with SAP on AWS, leveraging AWS’s regional infrastructure to adapt swiftly to changing customer needs and drive operational innovation.

123RF, a royalty-free stock media platform headquartered in Malaysia with over 170 million assets, is transforming the stock image industry with Gen AI on AWS. With the AWS Malaysia Region, the company gains faster performance, stronger reliability, and lower costs—fuelling AI innovation and delivering a better experience for customers who depend on high-quality stock imagery and AI-generated content.

Maxis, one of Malaysia’s largest telecommunications companies, is using the AWS Malaysia Region to accelerate its digital transformation, migrating workloads locally to gain lower latency, stronger security, and advanced cloud features—enhancing connectivity and digital experiences while supporting Malaysia’s digital agenda.

AWS supports startups by giving them the tools and funding to scale quickly without heavy upfront costs. Through AWS Activate, startups get free credits for AWS services, technical support, and training resources. This reduces early infrastructure expenses, speeds up product development, and makes it easier to test and grow globally.

The startup ecosystem in Malaysia also witnessed impressive innovation over the past year. Companies like Mesolitica, a leading AI startup, built a culturally relevant large language model that understands more than 16 languages, leading to a 5.5-fold increase in throughput while reducing compute costs by 87% at 20% lower latency on AWS. Other innovative startups such as INFLUASIA have also used AWS to rapidly scale their businesses, strengthening Malaysia’s tech entrepreneurship landscape.

Supporting our commitment to making global technology readily accessible locally, our Malaysia team has accelerated the launch of global Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) in the AWS Malaysia Region, including SAP, MongoDB, Red Hat, and others. These partnerships underscore AWS’s role as a pivotal enabler of global technology adoption in Malaysia.

We are also ensuring Malaysians have the relevant skills to drive innovation. In October 2024, AWS launched the Skills to Jobs Tech Alliance in Malaysia, supporting Malaysia Digital (MD) and reaching 25,000 students across 24 institutions. Since 2017, AWS has trained more than 100,000 Malaysians in cloud skills, helping companies boost productivity as cloud and AI adoption grows.

Looking ahead, AWS remains deeply committed to supporting Malaysia’s ambitions to become a regional hub for AI. Our roadmap includes further expanding our suite of services, investing in local talent development, and fostering an ecosystem in which innovation thrives.
