We all make mistakes” was Greg Norman’s response to a question about the 2018 murder and dismemberment of journalist Jamal Kashoggi. Norman was promoting LIV Golf, funded by Saudi Arabia, which was blamed for the killing. He went on “… and you just want to learn by (sic) those mistakes and how you can correct them going forward.” Now that LIV Golf has filed for bankruptcy after wasting US$5 billion (RM20.4 billion) on golf’s civil war, the sport can only wish that Norman had learned from his.

When Trevor Francis became the first £1 million player in British football in 1979, Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough claimed he reduced the figure by £1 so the landmark fee might not go to the player’s head. Back in 1961, Tottenham boss Bill Nicholson similarly trimmed the £100,000 he paid ...

Business of Sports: Desperation drives wild spending as EPL ‘eats itself’

It’s been a tumultuous summer. Football looked very different in a World Cup that never seemed to end and was almost auctioned off. And now there are rule changes, a cull of managers, no Pep and no Mo, but Jeff Bezos has arrived. The big kick-off feels like coming home from a long overseas trip a...

Business Of Sports: All change in the EPL, but the best league always delivers

Put simply, football saved the World Cup, and now the world is saving football. The beautiful game rose above the stratospheric pricing, selective hospitality and hideous intrusions of Fifa’s blatant cash grab to deliver a spectacular tournament in June and July; sane voices have now risen agains...

Business Of Sports: Football breathes a sigh of relief after Infantino’s Icarus moment

In the bitter aftermath of the 23rd World Cup, the final is now being seen as a battle between football and Fifa, as well as between Spain and Argentina. “Enough is enough,” the sport appeared to be saying as La Roja laid siege to an increasingly desperate and ill-disciplined defence by the reign...

Business Of Sports: World Cup was a success but football must be wary of Fifa’s greed

How to win the World Cup? As the search for the elusive formula intensifies, the conclusions only mystify. And as the 2026 edition builds to a climax, we are no nearer to discovering the elixir. Size, stats, economics, lifestyle, GDP, DNA, diet or presidential phone call?

All have been ...

Business of Sports: Formula for winning the World Cup remains elusive

As was fervently hoped, but seriously doubted, football has come to the rescue of the most damned, expensive and extravagant World Cup in history. Unprecedented in scale and price, the 23rd edition kicked off against a backdrop of war, indifference among the hosts and a mix of outrage and trepida...

Business of Sports: World Cup defies the doubters, but is football feeding a monster?

Now that “the greatest event that humanity has ever seen” (according to Fifa president Gianni Infantino) is finally underway, George Orwell’s famous 1945 assertion that international sport was “war minus the shooting” has to be revisited. In 2026, football’s 23rd World Cup comes with the shooting...

Business Of Sports: Can the football save a World Cup too big for its boots?

A pivotal season in the English Premier League has just ended with Arsenal breaking a 22-year title drought to outlast Manchester City, whose Pep Guardiola said adios after a trophy-laden decade. But for the two great diasporas of fans around the world, the story was Manchester United finishing s...

Business of Sports: Is tide turning in Liverpool-United battle for supremacy?

He’s not special anymore, but nor are Real Madrid. José Mourinho, grey, grumpy and without a league title for more than a decade, needs a big turnaround to restore a tarnished legacy. Real, trophyless for two seasons and watching a remake of Fight Club in the dressing room, needs a strongman to restore order. What could be the remarriage of the summer is looking increasingly convenient.

Business of Sports: Real have become a basket case but Mourinho is ready
