2 Books to read
The Sellout — Paul Beatty
Following this week’s announcement of winners for the Man Booker Prize, it’s a good time to curl up on the couch and pull a book out. Becoming the first US author to win the highly coveted Man Booker Prize, Paul Beatty’s The Sellout follows the story of a young black man named Bonbon who is on trial in the Supreme Court after his attempts to reinstate slavery and racial segregation in a suburb of Los Angeles. Following Marlon James’ win with A Brief History of Seven Killings last year, this is the second consecutive Man Booker Prize success for independent publisher Oneworld. Eileen — Otessa Moshfegh
Narrated by the damaged and self-described unassuming protagonist Eileen Dunlop, the novel centres on the “girl you’d expect to see on a city bus, reading some clothbound book from the library about plants or geography”. Filled with dark and dour yet comical witticisms, the story unravels a disturbing set of events that occur a week before Christmas in 1964.
