KUALA LUMPUR: The scheduled dates for Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial set for this week have been deferred to March 2, as lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah has to attend to his son’s wedding.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib told the press that Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah allowed an application by the defence to postpone the trial, which was previously slated for today and on Friday.
Muhammad Shafee’s son, Muhammad Farhan Shafee, who is also a practicing lawyer, has his wedding set for Thursday in Penang.
The rest of the dates for the trial remain as previously fixed by Justice Sequerah — March 2-6, 9-13, 19-20, 23-27, 30-31, the whole of April, May 4 and the whole month of June until October, including Fridays until 12.30pm, with the exception of weekends and public holidays for the 1MDB-Tanore trial.
Najib is facing four charges of abuse of power and 21 charges of money laundering involving a sum of more than RM2.28 billion of 1MDB funds.
Former 1MDB chief executive officer Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi, the ninth prosecution witness, was being cross-examined by the defence when the trial adjourned last Thursday.
