11.20am: It's a three-cornered fight for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat (P59). PAS' Nizar filed papers at 9.06am, BN's Ismail at 9.20am, Independent candidate Kamarul Ramizu Idris 9.35am. Three objections were received but none accepted.

The Batang Ai state by-election will see a straight fight between BN candidate Malcom Mussem Lamoh and Jawah Gerang of PKR.

An unprecedented 15 nominations were submitted for the Bukit Selambau state by-election, highest since eight candidates stood for the Tanjug Kapor, Sabah state seat during the 2008 general election.

11.15am: Karpal said Umno supporters pelted his van with water bottles, hitting the windscreen. He also said police was there but did not do anything. No one was hurt in the incident.

11.08am: Karpal Singh and Gobind Singh Deo arrive at the Bukit Gantang nomination centre.

11am: The display of nomination papers for objections is officially over. Any objections after this will not be entertained.

10.35am: Umno VP Zahid walks over to the Opposition tent to speak with the Opposition leaders. BN supporters gather at the designated area.

10.29am: When asked on the derhaka issue, Nizar said: "we were expecting that right from the beginning but we have our own way of rebutting that. People don't easily buy that anymore."

10.24am: PAS' Hadi says they are confident in getting at least 40% of the Malay votes.

"We need just a bit more from young voters and non-malay voters to carry us to victory," he said.

He is however worried about the violation of the norms of parliamentary democracy which already happened such as in the misuse of media and government machinery.

"What we are worried about is that this transition of national leadership will cause an increase in this undemocratic attitude," he said.

10.22am: Malcom Mussem Lamoh of BN and Jawah Gerang of PKR file nomination papers to contest in the Batang Ai by-election.

10.14am: Zambry said Umno President Datuk Seri Najib Razak's speech on unity and Tun Dr Mathathir Mohammad's presence at Umno General Assembly will help as it showed that the party is united and will boost the party morale and that of the people as well.

Zambry also warned the Opposition on the Perak issues because "it will all boil down to issue of the Sultan".

10.06am: Lim Guan Eng says the by-elections will determine the survival of democracy.

10.03am: Thirteen independents, BN's Ganesan and PKR's Manikumar have submitted their nomination papers for the Bukit Selambau by-election. Nomination period closed at 10am.

The nomination papers will be displayed for public viewing and for any protests until 11am.

PAS supporters gather at their designated area near the Bukit Gantang nomination centre.9.39am: Khairy walks towards the PAS supporters, which prompts them to shout "rasuah" even louder while a few scaled the gate. Hard to estimate number of BN supporters as the crowd stretch down the road for about one km whereas PAS spread out on a hill.

9.37am: Independent candidate Kamarul Ramizu Idris files his nomination papers.

9.25am: PAS supporters shouting "rasuah" towards the BN leaders whose tent is situated in front of them.

9.24am: Terangganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said, Gerakan President Tan Sri Koh Tsu Koon and MCA President Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat is also at the Bukit Gantang nomination centre.

9.20am: BN's Datuk S Ganesan arrives at Bukit Selambau nomination centre. Hordes of supporters of BN, PKR and independents beating drums and kompangs outside the centre while hundreds of riot police keep a close watch.

9.19am: PAS crowd swells to about 10,000. Rival crowds are kept apart by a sports field in front of nomination centre.

Mukhriz Mahathir, who lost the Umno Youth chief race, arrives alone. Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib and Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam also at the Bukit Gantang nomination centre to show support.

9.14am: Ismail files his nomination form. Muhyiddin, who accomapnied him into the centre ground, was booed by PAS supporters.

9.10am: Muhyiddin, Umno Vice President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Zambry enter nomination centre with Ismail.

9.05am: BN candidate Ismail Safian arrives. BN supporters continue to swell in numbers; PAS shouting grows louder.

9.05am: Ten independents and Parti Keadlian Rakyat candidate S Manikumar arrives at the Bukit Selambau nomination centre at SM Teknik Sungai Petani. Earliest to arrive was independent Husaini Yaacob at 7.20am.

8.57am: Nizar says the by-election in Bukit Gantang will determine the socio-political landscape of the country.

8.50am: DAP's Lim Guan Eng, Lim Kit Siang, Datuk Ngeh Khoo Ham, Nga Kor Ming and M Kulasegaran arrive outside nomination centre. Guan Eng says it will be a close fight as BN will use all means to win.

8.42am: Datuk Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin arrive at nomination centre to file his paper. He is accompanied by PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Deputy President Nasharuddin Mat Isa.

8.32am: Helicopter is hovering above the nomination centre area to monitor the situation.

8.29am: Kuala Terengganu member of parliament Abdul Wahid Endut is confident of a win in Bukit Gantang. He and PAS Secretary General Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar have arrived at the nomination centre.

8.23am: PAS supporters number about 5,000. They are shouting Allahu Akhbar as they station themselves about 100m from the nomination centre.

8.05am: BN leaders who are at the Umno Taiping division are Muhyiddin, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan bin Tengku Mansor, Datuk Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Zambry Abdul Kadir, MIC Vice President Datuk S Veerasingam. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's former good friend and supporter Datuk S Nallakaruppan is also seen.

7.58am: New Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has arrived to join the BN supporters.

7.46am: Supporters have gathered at the respective designated area, ready to march with their candidates to the nomination centre in Bukit Gantang.

Newly minted Umno Deputy President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to accompany the Barisan Nasional candidate.

There is heavy police and FRU presence. Both sides of supporters are singing and shouting at each other. Pas supporters have just been told to move back to their gathering place which is a few hundred metres away from the BN supporters.
