KUALA LUMPUR (July 27): Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) said on Wednesday (July 27) that the goverment-controlled utility had at 3.02pm fully restored electricity supply in areas across Peninsular Malaysia affected by a power outage since 12.39pm, due to a damaged equipment within the main power intake substation in Yong Peng, Johor.

In several Facebook posts, TNB said areas affected by the power outage included Petaling Jaya, Cheras and Bangi in the Klang Valley, besides Bayan Lepas and Seberang Jaya in Penang, and Panchor in Johor.

The company added that Bandar Indera Mahkota in Pahang was also affected.

"We apologise for the constraints/difficulties experienced by users during the [electricity] supply disruption," TNB said.

“[Power supply in] most of the affected areas was successfully restored gradually in as early as 20 minutes [after the outage started] as a result of the TNB technical team's continuous effort," the company explained.

TNB said the power outage resulted in a 2.2GW electricty load loss, accounting for about 10% of Peninsular Malaysia's total electricity demand.

In a later statement, TNB president and CEO Datuk Baharin Din assured that Malaysia’s electricity supply is stable, as disruptions are able to be addressed in an immediate manner.

Some areas affected by the blackout saw supply normalise as early as 20 minutes after the cut off, Baharin said.

“Our capabilities in restoring supply today follow the huge continuous investments by TNB to upgrade the grid with the support of the Energy Commission (EC) and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources,” Baharin said.

He expressed apology to affected electricity users, and said that TNB will perform detailed investigations with the EC to undertake preventive and improvement measures.

The technical issues at the Yong Peng site did not inform any fire, Baharin added, and that the facility is fully back in operations.

On Bursa Malaysia, TNB closed unchanged at RM8.03 on Wednesday, giving it a market value of about RM46.17 billion.
