KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 9): You’d think that a veteran TV mogul might have had enough of looking at screens after a lifetime of doing so. Not for Tan Sri Mohd Effendi Norwawi, who has just launched his latest project — BigShot Golf & Entertainment — at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The screens are very different, of course: giant ones, with more than 100 “channels” from “Augusta” to “St Andrews”, but the message is essentially the same: This is a space designed for the golfer, his family and his business. In this week’s Options cover story, the 74-year-old former head honcho of NTV7 and Bloomberg Malaysia, together with his son Eridani, tell us about the rising trend of indoor golf facilities like theirs and the way the father-and-son team are aiming to transform the game of golf for Malaysians.
Elsewhere in this issue, Chong Wei-Hsiang talks about KL’s newest art gallery, Sareng; the founders of Dignity for Children Foundation recall the past as the NGO turns 25; Yuri Schneider puts pen to paper in a charming book that dispels unkind myths about stepmothers; and CEO of the CIMB Foundation Rafe Haneef gets into the nitty gritty of this year’s CIMB Artober.
If you’ve never been to the Royal Belum State Park in Perak to see how the Menraq rangers play their part in saving the Malayan tiger, our story on how these apex predators are kept alive provides some keen insights. Shop for some practical, stylish picks in our Treasury column, and whet your appetite for fine watchmaking with an exhibition of Patek Philippe’s rare domed clocks at an upcoming exhibition organised by Cortina Watch at the Maison’s Suria KLCC boutique.
Two other pull-outs make this issue of The Edge’ Options extra special — a preview of what is to come at Art of Time, luxury retailer Swiss Watch’s platform to engage with fellow watch aficionados; and a special issue on London as the Battersea Power Station prepares to open in the UK. The project, handled by a consortium of Malaysian companies, is set to be one the most exciting launches in post-pandemic London. Our special issue has all the details on the new project, as well as a guide of what’s best to see, eat and do in the British capital.
