KUALA LUMPUR (June 21): Sunway Healthcare group’s flagship hospital Sunway Medical Centre has been appointed as Healthcare Organiser (HCO) by ProtectHealth Corporation Sdn Bhd to perform clinical management and public vaccinations at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre (SPCC).

In a statement today, Sunway Healthcare said the role was previously helmed by Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah (PKD), since the centre opened its doors for vaccinations on March 10 this year.

“Fully-trained healthcare professionals including medical doctors and nurses from Sunway Healthcare Group of hospitals and health services are mobilised and are working alongside the Selangor Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) to manage the SPCC vaccination centre,” it said.

Sunway Healthcare added that Sunway Medical Centre now manages two Petaling district public vaccination centres along with the SunMed Convention Centre.

“SunMed Convention Centre was repurposed as a vaccination centre for its frontline workers in March 2021 and subsequently was appointed by ProtectHealth as a Pusat Pemberian Vaksin Hospital Swasta (PPVHS) in phase two of the programme rollout for the public since March 31, 2021.

“Combined doses administered at SunMed Convention Centre and Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre will reach 3,000 doses daily, with plans to increase capacity to gradually reach up to 5,000 doses,” the healthcare group said.

Sunway Healthcare noted that Sunway Bhd has committed more than RM50 million since March 2020 to battle the Covid-19 pandemic, and has last month provided its convention centre rent-free for 11 months to support the National Covid-19 Immunisation Program (PICK), which has set the group back RM28 million in actual costs.

Sunway Healthcare group managing director Lau Beng Long added that the flagship hospital is greatly appreciative of the incredible contribution from PKD Petaling district, from the inception of the mega vaccination centre in SPCC to vaccinating over 76,000 of the Selangor population.

“Sunway Medical Centre strives to respond swiftly to the country’s initiative towards herd immunity. By committing resources from private healthcare entities in vaccination centres, it believes that this can help the public health system to continue its battle in fighting Covid-19,” he said.

ProtectHealth chief executive officer (CEO) Dr Anas Alam Faizli said the participation of the private sector is critical to ensure that everyone works together to increase vaccination capacity nationwide in the implementation of PICK.

“ProtechHealth greatly appreciates Sunway Medical Centre stepping up as the HCO in the SPCC vaccination centre in helping to accelerate efforts towards achieving herd immunity,” he added.

At 11.09am today, Sunway’s share price rose two sen or 1.18% to RM1.71, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM8.39 billion.
