AS one of Malaysia’s most renowned fashion designers, Bernard Chandran does not disappoint with his latest Spring/Summer 2016 collection. The collection marks the first time Bernard Chandran has presented a menswear range. The glamorous designer (both on and off the catwalk) delivers a collection that is far from understated.
Presented at Paris Fashion Week, the menswear line takes inspiration from sportswear by capturing the spirit of the vibrant individual who makes an effort with his wardrobe. Entitled the ‘Active Intellectual’, the collection has a strong contemporary aesthetic with the on-trend bomber jacket and baggy black trousers.
Deconstructive in nature, the collection features detailed threadwork, embroidery and hot metallics that are embellished with extreme sport trimmings creating a luxurious sensual refinement to modern athletic wear. Chandran is often recognised for bridging the gap between cultural and contemporary designs, and this collection is a testament to that with his use of colour and embroidery on two tops.
Known for his fine attention to detail, the menswear collection features several gender-bending fabrics such as silk organza, raffia, lurex and cotton that generate a contemporary collection for men. By mixing what would usually be material for women’s clothing Chandran has instead used it to push the gender boundaries in his men’s collection.
