SHARES in Berjaya Corp Bhd (BCorp) (fundamental: 0.35/3, valuation: 0.9/3) triggered our momentum algorithm yesterday for the first time this year. It closed up one and a half sen or 3.95% at 39.5 sen yesterday, with a volume of 30.88 million shares, far exceeding its 200-day average volume of 6.55 million shares.
BCorp reported an increase in net profit of 44.37% to RM176.51 million or 3.27 sen per share for the quarter ended Oct 31, 2016 (2QFY17), from RM122.25 million or 2.47 sen a year ago, it said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Dec 29. The better performance from its property investment and development business segment was largely due to sales of residences at its recently opened Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto in Japan. Meanwhile, its 2QFY17 revenue was 8.88% higher at RM2.46 billion compared with RM2.26 billion in 2QFY16. The group said its restaurant and cafe business also recorded higher profit due to higher contribution from the Starbucks operations in Malaysia.
At the current share price, BCorp is trading at 0.26 times its book value.
