Star Media appoints two new independent directors

KUALA LUMPUR (June 1): Star Media Group Bhd has appointed Choong Tuck Oon and Wong You Fong as independent and non-executive directors of the company.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, Star Media said Choong, 59, specialises in technology, strategy and transformation. He is active in the digital start-up ecosystem in Asean, where he is frequently called upon to advise corporates, universities and startups on innovations, including fintech, media-tech, ecommerce, data analytics and new-age technologies. 

He started his career in Petroliam Nasional Bhd, where he held executive positions in various upstream and downstream functions for more than 7 years.

"He was with Accenture for 24 years, where he retired as senior partner in the Asia-Pacific financial services practice. He has also led strategic initiatives with more than 20 large domestic and global banks and insurers in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, including national payment projects in Malaysia and Singapore," Star said.

Choong is currently an independent non-executive director on the boards of Credit Guarantee Corp Malaysia Bhd, FIDE Forum Malaysia and NTUC Income Insurance Co-operative Ltd of Singapore. He previously served on the boards of RHB Bank Bhd, RHB Islamic Bank Bhd, RHB Indochina Bank Ltd, RHB Indochina Securities Ltd and RHB Private Equity Holdings Sdn Bhd.

In a separate filing with the bourse today, Star Media said Wong, 46, is a practising lawyer with 21 years of experience and is currently practising under the firm of Messrs Wong You Fong and Associates.

Star Media shares fell one sen or 0.44% to close at RM2.27 today, with 299,400 shares traded, for a market capitalisation of RM1.68 billion.
