PETALING JAYA: Sime Darby Bhd has introduced its “Robin Food” food surplus app, which connects supermarkets with extra food to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and charities, which in turn will distribute the food to those in need.

The mobile app, the first of its kind in Malaysia, was originally created by four teenagers from Sarawak, who participated in the 2016 Sime Darby Young Innovators Challenge (SDYIC) in June this year.

At present, Tesco Malaysia is the sole donor registered in the system. Products received will be inspected and distributed by two “food banks” or delivery trucks owned by the Food Aid Foundation.

“We are aiming to develop the app further to encourage more corporations, hypermarkets and hotels to contribute surplus food to the needy,” said Sime Darby's group chief strategy and innovation officer Hari Nair at the launch of the app yesterday.
