KUALA LUMPUR (April 24): Four days after it was closed for sanitisation and disinfection, the Selayang Wholesale Market reopened today.
Selayang folk could be seen queueing up — in person and in their vehicles — to enter the famous market, touted as the largest one in Kuala Lumpur, earlier in the day.
In a Bernama report, Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said traders and workers at the market, as well as lorry drivers moving goods into the premises, must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to a schedule.
He warned that failure to do so would cause the authorities to shut the market down again.
To recap, the government had put areas surrounding the market under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) to conduct mass Covid-19 screenings of the 16,000 in the area, 90% of whom are foreign nationals.
The government aims to test 1,500 to 2,000 people per day. The EMCO will last until May 3.
