(Nov 26): Putrajaya tabled the Sarawak electoral redelineation proposal to Parliament today to ratify boundary changes ahead of state polls due next year.
The Election Commission's (EC) report and statute were on the tables of all parliamentarians this morning.
The proposal was put into the order paper today and will come up once the federal budget is passed next Tuesday, Dec 1.
It will be debated on Dec 2 and passed on to be gazetted.
The EC tabled the report after defeating an attempt by electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 to halt the process in court.
On Nov 16, the EC had reportedly said a simple majority in the Dewan Rakyat was needed before the proposal – which would increase the number of state seats from 71 to 82 — could be implemented.
The redelineation exercise has been criticised by the opposition and Bersih 2.0 as an attempt to protect Barisan Nasional's vote bank.
The process was completed several months ago with state elections expected to be held before next June. – The Malaysian Insider
