KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 10): Sapura Energy Bhd’s joint-venture (JV) company SapuraOMV Upstream (Western Australia) Pty Ltd has submitted the environment plan (EP) for its offshore Kanga-1 exploration well in Western Australia (WA) to the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (Nopsema) for the JV’s planned oil and gas (O&G) operations there.

According to a notice on Sapura Energy’s website and updates on Nopsema’s website, the Kanga-1 exploration well, within the Dampier sub-basin, is approximately 163km offshore north-west of Karratha, WA.

"The exploration drilling activity will take place between Quarter 3, 2021 and Quarter 2, 2022 for a duration of approximately 40 days.

"The Kanga-1 exploration well EP is now available for public comment, through Nopsema, for 30 days.

"Nopsema’s preferred method of comment is through its dedicated website,” Sapura Energy said.

According to Nopsema, SapuraOMV Upstream (WA) sumitted its EP to Nopsema on July 27, 2020, while consultation on the EP opened on July 29 and will close on Aug 28.

Nopsema said SapuraOMV Upstream (WA)  plans to drill the Kanga-1 single exploration well, within permit WA-412-P, within the Dampier sub-basin in Commonwealth waters.

"The Kanga-1 well is located approximately 163km north of the town of Karratha in water depth of approximately 147m. An operational area has been defined within permit WA-412-P, which represents a 4km x 4km area centred around the Kanga-1 well.

“The Kanga-1 well will be drilled using a semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU) which will be anchored to the seabed. Anchor handling vessels and/or offshore multipurpose vessels will provide support to the MODU throughout the drilling campaign.

"The timing of the activity is dependent upon the MODU and vessel availability, weather conditions and receipt of the required statutory approvals. The activity will be undertaken for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week,” Nopsema said.

SapuraOMV Upstream (WA) is a JV company formed through a strategic partnership between Sapura Energy and OMV Aktiengesellschaft.

At Bursa Malaysia today, Sapura Energy's share price closed up 0.5 sen or 5.26% at 10 sen for a market capitalisation of about RM1.6 billion. The stock saw some 218.05 million shares traded.
