The Edge-Bursa Malaysia Kuala Lumpur Rat Race makes a return on Aug 11. This unique race will once again benefit 20 charitable organisations from various causes. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the race since it was first flagged off in 2000.

Donations collected from participating local and foreign companies in Malaysia will be channelled towards these beneficiaries, which will be announced .

Every year, the funds collected have increased substantially, proving that the Rat Race has been a hit among corporations which want to do their bit for the community. Since the inaugural race in 2000, a total of over RM7.5 million has been channelled to 70 charitable organisations. Last year, over 140 teams took time out to run for a good cause, helping to raise  over RM1.7 million.

Donations take the form of sponsoring a team of five runners to participate in the race.

The Kuala Lumpur Rat Race is a once-a-year opportunity for top executives and office workers to come together in a novel way to do their bit for charity. The race provides an avenue for Corporate Malaysia to fulfil its corporate social responsibilities. It is also an event that corporate types look forward to every year as they get to mingle with colleagues from different industries and let their hair down for one day, all in the name of charity. The rising participation and in the amount collected over the years are testament to the popularity of the Rat Race.

Participants will run in their office attire and some may even carry other executive paraphernalia such as mobile phones, PDAs, briefcases and laptops to vie for the “Best Dressed” award. Some participants also come in costumes unique to their company or nature of business.

Awards will be presented to the company that sends in the most number of teams, the top three teams, the top male and female runners and the top male and female CEOs from the 1km CEO Race. In addition, three special awards will also be given: Best Cheerleading Squads (top three), Most Senior Runner and Best Dressed CEO, which is a separate category from the Best Dressed Runners award.

A challenge trophy awaits the team that clocks in the fastest aggregate time.

The Edge and Bursa Malaysia are once again co-organisers of this event, while Yayasan Bursa Malaysia is the host. The Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association acts as technical adviser.
