(Oct 28): Police have completed their investigations into the stomping of pictures of prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang which occurred during the Bersih 4 rally in August and are waiting for further instructions from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).
In a written parliamentary reply, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the same applied to the Kota Baru incident involving the burning of effigies of DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and his son, Guan Eng, who is Penang chief minister.
“Police have conducted investigations under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for the stomping of Pekan and Marang pictures,” he said, referring to Najib and Hadi’s parliamentary constituencies.
“The investigation papers were referred to the deputy prosecutor on September 17, 2015 for further action.
“For the act of burning the effigies of Gelang Patah and Bagan, police have conducted investigations under 505(b) Penal Code,” he said in reference to Kit Siang and Guan Eng’s federal seats.
“The investigation papers were referred to the deputy prosecutor on October 13 2015 for further action,” Zahid told Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai).
Teo had asked what action had been taken against those who stepped on posters of Najib and Hadi as well as the burning of effigies of Kit Siang and Guan Eng.
During the 34-hour Bersih 4 rally on August 29 to 30, some participants had stomped on posters of Najib and Hadi, an act which went viral on social media.
Zahid had said a total of 267 police reports were lodged on the incident.
Following the police offer of a reward for more information, a 21-year-old site supervisor and his girlfriend surrendered themselves to the police in September to assist in investigations.
Two days before the September 16 “red shirt” rally which was held to counter Bersih 4, the effigies of Kit Siang and Guan Eng in yellow Bersih T-shirts were burned at an event in Kota Baru, Kelantan.
According to The Star, Umno Kota Baru chief Datuk Mohd Fathmi Che Salleh appeared in a four-minute YouTube video urging Umno members to come out in full force to support the September 16 rally for the sake of religion, race and country, and to counter DAP’s racism.
Fathmi, former political secretary to Najib, had denied that the event was organised by the Kota Baru Umno division. – The Malaysian Insider
