KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 15): Malaysia Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement would not proceed without the U.S.' participation. The is because the U.S. is the largest party in the 12-nation deal, Nikkei Asian Review quoted Najib as saying in a report today.
The TPP agreement includes Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.
Nikkei reported Najib insisted it was unlikely that the TPP agreement would take effect without the U.S., which accounted for some 60% of the combined gross domestic product of 12 countries involved.
"In its current guise, the TPP agreement cannot come into force, without the U.S.' involvement.
"As such, it is not a question of whether or not Malaysia — or any other country for that matter — could still proceed with its ratification," Najib told Nikkei in a written reply.
Najib's comments followed Republican candidate Donald Trump's victory against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the recent U.S. presidential election.
Analysts said Trump's victory had created uncertainty on U.S. policies on world political and economic backdrops.
