KUALA LUMPUR (July 24): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Malaysian Government did not compromise on transparency, good governance and integrity in the Sungai Buloh-Kajang mass rapid transit (MRT) project to ensure taxpayers' money were used in an appropriate manner.

Bernama quoted Najib as saying today Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission representatives sat on the executive committee of the Klang Valley's 51km Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT project. He said this was to ensure that the project was transparent and had a high level of integrity.

"A good structure in terms of governance, funding and a transparent tender system and implementation have obviously been the factors that have made the MRT project a success," Najib said in Parliament.

Najib was replying to a question from Datuk Liang Teck Meng (BN-Simpang Renggam) on the impact of the MRT transportation system that was developed without any concession agreement and at a much lower cost than the original estimate.

Najib said the project was completed on schedule with savings of RM2 billion on construction cost. He said the Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT was a success story for a project funded directly by the government without concessions.
