KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has launched its Terengganu Gas Terminal which uses the national oil company-owned carbon dioxide removal technology.

The terminal in Kertih is able to process up to 700 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas from the Malaysia-Thailand joint development area and from the North Malay Basin offshore Terengganu, Petronas said in a statement.

This would help to ensure the security and sustainability of supply to Petronas customers in Peninsular Malaysia as well as to the company’s own facilities in the region, said Petronas president and chief executive officer Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin.

He said the terminal is part of Petronas’ continuous commitment towards adding value to the oil and gas resources found offshore Peninsular Malaysia, and also reflects the company’s larger cleaner energy commitment in support of Malaysia’s environmental agenda to reduce its carbon footprint by 2030.

Wan Zulkiflee said the terminal, which uses the PN-1 Membrane System for carbon dioxide removal developed by Petronas and a partner, involved more than 80% participation of local contractors.

The project was completed four months ahead of schedule. At its launch on Tuesday, the terminal celebrated 10 million safe man hours without the lost-time incident and 1,300 incident-free days from the project start date in 2013.
