KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 16): Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd (PCG) said two fatalities have been reported due to the ammonia leakage incident at Petronas Chemicals Fertiliser Sabah Sdn Bhd.
In a statement, it said the leak, reported to have happened at 9.30 a.m. this morning, affected five workers of a contractor company who were conducting maintenance work during commissioning activities at the Sabah Ammonia Urea plant.
“PCG regrets to inform that two fatalities have been reported. The other three affected workers received medical treatment at the hospital. Two have been subsequently released, while one is reported stable and under observation.
“The company conveys its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and is extending all necessary assistance to their next of kin,” said the group.
PCG said the incident does not pose any immediate threat to the surrounding communities or environment, adding it is working closely with all relevant authorities to ensure safety of the people in the vicinity.
The group said an investigation has commenced and is currently ongoing.
