KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 28): Prime Minister Najib Razak tonight congratulated Malaysian athletes taking part in the SEA Games 2017 for achieving the target of winning 111 gold medals.
"I'm pleased to announce that we've managed to get 111 gold medals as we had targeted.
"With this, it is confirmed that Malaysia is the overall champion of the SEA Games. This achievement marks a glorious history created by all the Malaysian SEA Games athletes," he said at the Opening Ceremony of the River Of Life and Blue Pool projects here tonight, Bernama reported.
Malaysia picked up the 111th gold medal through national track cycling ace Azizulhasni Awang, who defeated his teammate Muhamad Shah Firdaus Sahrom in the Men's Individual Sprint final tonight at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, Bernama reported.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin shared the good news via Twitter. He tweeted: "Mission accomplished. #111 done."
