KUALA LUMPUR: Former deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais’ murder was allegedly linked to a charge sheet he was preparing against a “high-ranking government official”, his brother Charles said yesterday.

Charles told a packed press conference at his lawyer Americk Sidhu’s office that Kevin had confided in him while he was preparing the charge sheet in the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

He also alleged that his other brother, Datuk Richard Morais, was in cahoots with “someone” who is “controlling this game of chess” involving Kevin’s murder.

Charles claimed this was why Richard had taken Kevin’s body from the mortuary on the same day he (Charles) had filed an application in court to conduct a second post-mortem.

Charles also hit out at the AGC for allegedly hoodwinking him.

“They (AGC) had initially consented to the second post-mortem but made a U-turn later, asking me to get a court order instead.”

Charles has also prepared an 18-page statutory declaration (SD) on the Morais siblings’ relationship and several discussions he had with Kevin prior to the latter’s murder.

Charles in his SD said that two or three months before Kevin’s death, the deceased had told him that he was working on a case involving a “very high level” government official.

Charles, who lives in Atlanta, the United States, said his brother confided this to him over the phone and had spoken in Malayalam, fearing that his phone might have been tapped.

He also revealed that he is in possession of a pen drive Kevin had sent him by courier before he died.

“It is in safe custody in the US with someone who has instruction to release it publicly should anything untoward happen to me for swearing this SD.

“The content of this pen drive clearly and unequivocally reveals the investigations Kevin had been tasked with just before his untimely death, which implicates certain personalities who currently walk the corridors of power in Malaysia,” Charles said.

He said he did not believe Kevin was killed because he was prosecuting a government pathologist for corruption.

Six men have been charged with Kevin’s murder, while pathologist Dr R Kunasegaran has been charged with abetment.

Charles said he wanted a second post-mortem conducted on the deceased because the outcome of the first procedure was vague.

The stated cause of death was probable suffocation, Charles said yesterday, and this would have gotten the case against those charged with Kevin’s murder thrown out.

Kevin’s body was found in a cement-filled steel drum in a swamp in Taman Subang Mewah in USJ 1, Subang Jaya, 12 days after his abduction on Sept 4. — The Malaysian Insider
