KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has given the green light to Mizuho Corporate Bank (M) Bhd (Mizuho Malaysia) to offer commercial banking services in Malaysia, it said yesterday.

The Japanese banking group received approval from Bank Negara Malaysia for a new commercial banking licence in June 2010.

Mizuho Malaysia will be headed by Hiroyuki Yoshinari, who was previously in charge of mergers and acquisitions advisory and global money markets and currency markets in both the United States and Japan.

“We believe our extensive network and international presence in more than 30 countries will help facilitate international trade linkages and investment flows between Malaysia and other parts of the world,” Yoshinari said in a statement.

Mizuho has maintained a presence in Malaysia for nearly 30 years since the establishment of representative offices in Kuala Lumpur in 1981 and the subsequent establishment of its Labuan branch in 1993. Mizuho Malaysia and the Labuan branch of Mizuho Corporate Bank will work in close cooperation to carry out Mizuho’s business operations in Malaysia.
