SINGAPORE (April 9): Free-to-air broadcaster MediaCorp has laid off about 50 workers, according to the Singapore Union of Broadcasting Employees.

About half of those affected are members of the union.

"Through our union’s intervention, all union members affected by this restructuring are given fair compensation and treatment," it said today.

The union was formed in 1981 to represent workers in the broadcasting media industry. It has about 2,000 members.

MediaCorp announced a major reorganisation in January to move away from traditional media lines to focus on consumers and their preferences.

Last month, it appointed Shane Mitchell, a former head of a Sydney-based app development and marketing firm, to a newly created position to drive its digital business.
