KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s feed-in-tariff for renewable energy is lower compared with other countries because the operators in those countries apply a different cost structure, said Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Maximus Johnity Ongkili.

“We brought in consultants from the Sustainable Energy Development Authority and held consultations.

“We compared the costs or tariffs granted in other countries to ensure a satisfactory return for the capital,” he said in response to a query from Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR-Lembah Pantai) as to why the tariff in Malaysia is higher than those in neighbouring countries.

Nurul Izzah pointed out that Malaysia’s feed-in-tariff was US$0.05 (RM0.22)-US$0.1 per kWh compared with US$0.13-US$0.22 in Indonesia and US$0.12-US$0.19 in Thailand.

Ongkili said Malaysia’s renewable energy producer could also earn bonuses other than the regular feed-in-tariff.
