GEORGE TOWN (May 9): Pakatan Harapan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has won the contest for the Langkawi Parliamentary seat with a majority of 8,893.
His opponents were Barisan Nasional's Datuk Nawawi Ahmad and PAS' Zubir Ahmad.
Mahathir, 92, returned to the political fray this general election in the wake of the financial issues relating to BN chairman and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Yesterday, in his final plea to Malaysians he said: “I realise I am old and I don’t have much time left (but) this is the last time I can contribute to the struggle of the country.
“I am not looking for riches, positions or titles. I have enough but what I value is our people, race and religion. What we need is to vote out a government that is devoted to cash. That is all we need, and that is enough for me."
