KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 15): Malaysians now have more confidence in the independence of the judiciary, according to veteran DAP strongman Lim Kit Siang.

In a statement on Saturday (Jan 15), the Iskandar Puteri member of Parliament welcomed the statement by Chief Justice of Malaysia Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat reaffirming the important principle of the independence of the judiciary.

“Recently, the judiciary had acquitted itself well on this score on a number of cases.

“Steps must be taken to strengthen the principle of the independence of the judiciary as in excluding any executive influence in the appointment and promotion of judges,” he said.

He said this will be one important measure for the country to buck up after half a century of decline to fulfil the aspiration of Tunku Abdul Rahman for Malaysia to become “a haven of peace, harmony and happiness” and “a beacon of light in a difficult and distracted world”.

Lim was commenting on Tengku Maimun’s recent statement that she had never been approached by certain quarters to intervene in matters of the court in order to set several high profile individuals free from criminal charges.

Speaking to the media at a press conference here after officiating the Opening of the Legal year 2022 at the Palace of Justice on Friday, she also said while she had not been approached personally, judges decide cases according to evidence and the law.

“Judges make decisions on facts, evidence and testimonies and that is the principle. That is the core principle,” she said.
