KUALA LUMPUR: Genting UK’s casino in Star City in Birmingham, the UK, could make a return, albeit a smaller one, according to a report by the Birmingham Post on Monday.
A spokesman for Genting was quoted in the report as saying: “At this stage, we are considering a number of different possible options for the building in question.”
Last year, the daily reported that Genting was planning to close its casino in Star City in January this year, with a loss of around 220 jobs. The casino opened in 2003, but had been suffering in recent years, and had reduced in size and entertainment.
Genting still retains a lease on the building and it is now working with landlord Quadrant Estates on alternative uses for the vacant space there.
The Birmingham Post reported that a newly filed planning application suggests that a casino, albeit a much smaller one, could return to the ground floor of the venue where gaming tables are still in situ and used for training croupiers. A new restaurant could also be opened.
The report stated that Genting’s Star City casino was one of the largest in the region and had operated at the complex in Aston for 13 years. In 2015, Genting opened its new Resorts World complex at the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull, which has a casino, cinema, shops and several bars, and is seen as a rival to Star City. The group also operates casinos in the Birmingham city centre, Edgbaston and Coventry.
