KUALA LUMPUR (May 5): PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar retained the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat, defeating Barisan Nasional's Datuk Seri Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin in a nail-biting contest that held the nation's attention.

Official results at 11.35pm showed that Nurul Izzah had polled 31,008 votes, to 29,160 votes for Raja Nong Chik, to clinch a majority of 1,848 votes. Independent candidate Rusli Baba received 167 votes, while 519 votes were rejected.

Earlier, a tense situation developed outside the counting centre in Bangsar when her supporters formed a human barricade for fear that additional ballot boxes would be brought into the centre.

A stand-off between supporters of Nurul Izzah and Raja Nong Chik, with FRU personnel on standby, however, ended peacefully.

In defeating Raja Nong Chik, the caretaker minister of Federal Territories and Urban Well-being, Nurul Izzah convincingly proved her political credentials for a second time against powerful opponents.

In the 12th general election in 2008, Nurul Izzah had scored a major upset when she unseated Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who was the incumbent minister of women, family and community development.
