KUALA LUMPUR (April 12): Datuk Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi, former chairman and chief executive of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will join Pos Malaysia Bhd's board of directors effective tomorrow.

Pos Malaysia announced today that Sharil, 51, will serve as its independent non-executive director.

Sharil also holds directorships at Opcom Holdings Bhd, Bina Darulaman Bhd and Privasia Technology Bhd as their independent non-executive chairman. He is also a director of Digital Nasional Bhd, a newly set up special purpose vehicle that will undertake deployment of the 5G infrastructure and network nationwide.

Sharil is also presently a senior adviser to Quantephi Sdn Bhd, a boutique investment advisory firm in Malaysia and Asean Advisory Pte Ltd, a specialist advisory and consulting firm based in Singapore. He is also a member of the advisory board of the United Nations University Institute based in Macau, China.

According to Bursa Malaysia filing, Sharil is a law graduate and is formerly an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya, practising with Azman Davidson & Co and Zaid Ibrahim & Co early in his career before becoming a partner of an investment advisory firm called BinaFikir Sdn Bhd, which was eventually acquired by Malayan Banking Bhd. He was then invited to join MCMC as its chief operating officer in 2009 and was subsequently appointed to the position of chairman and chief executive from Oct 16, 2011 to Dec 31, 2014.

"Due to his extensive background and immense experience in corporate and regulatory sectors as well as legal and finance, his appointment to the board would bring a diverse range of disciplines to the board," said Pos Malaysia.

Pos Malaysia shares closed 0.5 sen or 0.57% higher at 88.5 sen today, valuing it at RM692.76 million. It saw 2.53 million shares done.
