PETALING JAYA: Embattled Selangor State Assemblywoman Elizabeth Wong has quit as Selangor state executive council (exco) member and Bukit Lanjan representative, anticipating the release of another slew of indecent photographs and videos.

"I have informed my party leaders that I am determined to relinquish all my positions as a Selangor state exco member as well as the state assemblywoman for Bukit Lanjan," Wong said in a statement today.

Wong, who was in charge of tourism, consumer affairs and environment in the state cabinet, said she would retain her membership in PKR.

She explained that she had been informed of a "fresh assault" comprising more photographs and videos circulated "in order to completely degrade and bury (her)" and that several media organisations had indicated to her that it would continue to publish stories surrounding her private life.

Wong, a first-time assemblywoman and human rights activist, was thrust into the spotlight on Monday following the release of grainy indecent photographs, believed to be taken while she was asleep and without her consent.

Calling the issue "the darkest episode in (her) life," Wong said she needed to rest and seek peace of mind to escape the controversy that had surfaced on Monday.

She was reported to have left the country.

Wong urged public discussions to centre on important issues given the global economic downturn, instead of her private life.

"My private life is not for public scrutiny, as I have not broken any law or caused harm to anyone," she said, pleading with the media and supporters for space.

Wong offered her resignation on Tuesday, but Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and PKR leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim advised her to go on extended leave instead.

Khalid had told reporters on Feb 18 that he would seek the views of Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah next Wednesday before making a decision on Wong’s status.

If her resignation was accepted, the Election Commission (EC) would have to call for a by-election within 60 days in the Bukit Lanjan state constituency, which encompasses parts of the middle-class areas Damansara, Bandar Utama and Bandar Sri Damansara.

Should this come to be, the contest for the Bukit Lanjan state seat would be the third by-election this year after the EC announced simultaneous by-elections for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary seat in Perak and the Bukit Selambau state assembly seat in Kedah on April 7.

During the March general elections, Wong won with a majority of 5,155 votes after obtaining 12,125 votes against the incumbent, Gerakan Women's former deputy chief Yong Dai Ying, who polled at 6,970 votes.

The Pakatan Rakyat government currently has 36 seats in the Selangor state assembly against Barisan Nasional’s 20.

The police have recorded statements from Wong and four journalists and are still seeking Wong’s former boyfriend Hilmi Hazimin Abdul Malek to assist in investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code on insulting the modesty of a woman, which carries a maximum of five years' jail, a fine or both.
