KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman Elizabeth Wong's decision to stay the course she embarked on just over a year ago as an elected representative has saved the country another by-election.

Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim and state exco should claim credit for standing by her and allowing her to resume her duties as an exco member.

Her decision not to walk away has surprised many, as a politician caught in such negative publicity could rarely make a comeback.

The difference in Wong's case is that, in the court of public opinion she has been perceived as a victim rather than a perpetrator of a scandal. And her supporters and voters rallied behind her, organising a signature campaign to plead their case with the Sultan of Selangor.

PAS, a member of the ruling Pakatan Rakyat, has come under fire from some bloggers for standing by Wong. However, a party insider said the grassroots were sympathetic towards Wong, as they see her as a victim. Many of PAS leaders, including Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, had also voiced support for Wong, but the party has remained quiet since her comeback announcement.

Another assemblyman said Wong was asked to come back as some of them were shouldering her portfolio and matters related to the constituency during her two months' absence.

"If there is no concrete or negative evidence on her, she should not be asked to go on leave for so long. If there is something new and negative, then it is another story. We need her back because we were shouldering her duties on top of ours," the assemblyman said.

A PKR insider said Wong had a strong ally in Khalid, who would continue to stand by her unless evidence of torrid sexual acts surfaced against her.

But although Wong was welcomed back, her purported liaison with Hilmi Malek, a Muslim, will continue to hang over her. If Hilmi is hauled to court and tried for close proximity, for instance, Wong would again be dragged into the limelight.

Is Wong's position tenable? Bukit Lanjan folks may not have to worry about her leaving the fort soon, unless new evidence surfaces.
