KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 16): Malaysia's daily Covid-19 cases topped 4,000 for the first time today at 4,029, which pushed the cumulative number of confirmed infections in the country to 155,095. Eight more deaths were reported, bringing the coronavirus' death toll here to 594.
According to the Ministry of Health (MoH), eight of the new cases were imported, whereby the individuals were infected overseas, while the rest were local transmissions, comprising 2,711 citizens and 1,310 non-citizens.
Selangor contributed the highest proportion of cases at 1,466 (36.4% of total new infections), followed by Johor (719 cases), Sabah (449 cases), Kuala Lumpur (347 cases) and Negeri Sembilan (214 cases).
As for the eight new deaths reported, four were from Sabah and one each was recorded in Selangor, Perak, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang.
New recoveries, meanwhile, came in at 1,939, with total recoveries to date at 115,227 or 75.7% of overall cases.
As new cases continued to outpace recoveries, active cases that carry transmission risks climbed to 37,126 — also a fresh high.
Six new clusters with 269 infections have been identified, the MoH said.
This means the country has detected 641 clusters to date, of which 356 have ended — including five more today. Hence, the number of active clusters now stands at 285, of which 71 clusters reported an increase in cases.
As for the six new clusters, they are: the Senai Cyber Cluster in Kulai, Johor (114 cases), Tembok Nanas Cluster in Pontian, Johor (41 cases), Jalan Sembrong Cluster in Kluang, Johor (18 cases), Jalan Permata Cluster in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan (61 cases), Taman Juta Cluster in Hilir Perak, Perak (14 cases) and Kampung Lebu Cluster (21 cases).
