KUALA LUMPUR (July 25): To mark World Nature Conservation Day, observed annually on July 28, Options talks to Datu Md Ahbam Abulani from Hutan; Dr Wong Siew Te, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre; Dr Louisa Ponnampalam, a co-founder of MareCet; Bornean Carnivore Programme research manager Chrishen Gomez; and Reza Cockrell and Allen Tan from The Habitat Penang Hill on the unique stories behind their organisations, and what they are doing to safeguard the environment for humans and animals alike.

Also in this issue, the husband-and-wife team behind Jungle House talk about sourcing honey from jungles and ethical farms and what bees do for our ecosystem, while the founder of Fuze Ecoteer shares how everyone can be a conservationist.

Meanwhile, researchers at SAFE Acoustics have developed an adaptable and inexpensive device that can record the sounds animals make in real time and, from there, decipher the health of the environment around them. Bioacoustics technology has helped scientists discover deadly amphibian ailments, track poaching and identify changes in animal reproductive patterns, among other things.

Reuters’ Danish Siddiqui was killed on July 16 while covering clashes between Afghanistan security forces and the Taliban in Kandahar city. The award-winning photojournalist’s works reveal his talent, bravery and utmost respect for his subjects.
