7.50pm: The fast-growing crowd of Pas supporters are cheering each time the tally for Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin is announced. So far, the Pas supporters vastly outnumber the BN supporters, who are hardly noticeable.

BN's Malcolm Mussen Lamoh wins Batang Ai state by-election with 3,907 votes, defeating Jawah Gerang of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) who polled 2,053 votes, according to Bernama.

7.40pm: Bukit Gantang: Pas is leading by a 1,370-vote majority. BN has 6,477 votes, Pas 7,847, independent 18

7.35pm: Bukit Gantang: There are 112 ballot boxes. 30 has been received so far. 82 ballot boxes still on the way with 2 at the tallying centre.

7.29pm: Bukit Gantang: Pas deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa said out of the 44% votes counted, Pas is leading by 2,391 votes.

7pm: Ballot boxes from the various polling centres are beginning to arrive at the Taiping Municipal building under heavy police and helicopter escort.

Currently, the presence of the PAS faithful dwarfs that of BN supporters.

6.35pm: Official results from 15 out of 26 stations of Batang Ai: BN 1,698 votes vs PKR 831 votes, according to The Star.

6.20pm: Security is heavy outside the Taiping Municipal building where the votes for the Bukit Gantang by-election are being tallied.

Onlookers are beginning to arrive but so far nothing untoward has taken place.

At the rear part of the building, PAS supporters braving the heavy drizzle to await the results.

6.13pm: Bukit Gantang has 75% voter turnout, Bukit Selambau has 70% and Batang Ai has 71%, says EC Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

5pm: Voting closes. 

4.45pm: It started raining heavily in Bukit Selambau from 4.35pm. Roads are congested and the police are blocking roads leading to polling stations and diverting traffic to ease congestion.

3.17pm: Dark skies and rain blanket parts of Bukit Gantang. Road leading to Kuala Sepetang is still congested.

2.26pm: 58.15% of voters have cast their votes in Bukit Gantang as at 2pm, says EC Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

2.20pm: As at 2pm, 53% have cast their votes in Bukit Selambau amidst blue skies, now overcast with dark clouds.

2.06pm: Kedah EC director Zainal Abidin Zakaria says only logos of candidates, minus names, to be used on boxes where ballot papers are placed during counting.

1.50pm: Bukit Selambau independent candidate Vaneson Michael lodges a police report stating that his fish logo on the vote counting box was switched to a telephone logo, which belonged to another independent candidate Mejar Anuar Abdul Hamid. Vaneson's name on the ballot paper was also incorrectly stated as "Vinsen".

12.50pm: Traffic is coming to a crawl at major roads linking the Bukit Gantang constituency as the expected rain has started.

The situation at the main Simpang intersection is chaotic as police have closed several turnings to Taiping and Kuala Sepetang, forcing drivers to go further and make detours to reach their destination.

Roads leading into Ayer Kuning are also congested.

12.37pm: As at noon, 42% voters in Bukit Selambau have cast their votes, according to Kedah EC director Zainal Abidin Zakaria.

Both BN and PAS booths set up near SRJK(C) Sin Min are filled with voters waiting to check their registration details.


Most of the voters say they are trying to avoid the forecast rain this afternoon. 

10.40am: Heavily guarded Perak state assembly Speaker V Sivakumar makes an appearance outside SRJK(C) Sin Min in Simpang to speak to PAS party workers. 

He was waving enthusiastically to party workers who cheered him on.

10.09am: Election Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof says about 20% voters have cast their votes as of 10am.

9.41am: The supporters of both BN and PAS forgot their main objective of attracting voters when they engaged in a war of words heckling each other instead of wooing voters.

When BN supporters shouted "penderhaka" at the PAS folk, the retort was a sharp and unison, almost rehearsed "Siapa panggil Sultan Terengganu binatang?"

However, cooler heads prevailed when the older ones among them reminded their younger colleagues that voters were walking by.

9.36am: Supporters of BN and Pakatan Rakyat outnumber voters at most of the 22 polling stations in Bukit Selambau.

9.17am: BN candidate Ismail is confident that BN will win the Bukit Gantang by-election and predicted 1,000 to 3,000 majority. When asked if his win is an endorsement for new Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Ismail said yes.

Asked what if Pas wins, he said: "I leave it to the people."

Ismail came late to the nomination centre as he made a stop at the Umno Bukit Gantang division chief's house for prayers and met with some supporters.

Ismail also said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's presence helped as Mahathir's return influenced those who supported him.

9.10am: Voters are being wooed by supporters of both BN and PAS candidates at feverish pitch since early this morning. Shouts of "tengok bulan" and "undi BN" were drummed into voters walking towards polling centres.

Nizar has been going from one polling centre to another since 7.30am to check on the progress of the voting. Nizar is not a registered voter in this constituency.

9.09am: For the Batang Ai by-election, BN candidate Malcolm Mussen Lamoh casts his vote at Rumah Renggie Bukong under the Klampu polling station at 9.09am.

His rival, PKR's Jawah Gerang, who is also the former five-term Lubok Antu Member of Parliament, casts his vote at SK Nanga Kumpang under the Sayat polling station in Engkilili.

8.40am: BN's Datuk S Ganesan casts his vote at Ladang Perbadanan Kedah Tamil school.

8.36am: Taiping police chief ACP Raja Musa Raja Razak said light strike force has been deployed to all 32 polling stations to ensure security.

8.20am: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate S Manikumar casts his vote at SMK Taman Ria Jaya. 

There are 35,125 voters in the Bukit Selambau by-election and its main contenders are BN's Datuk S Ganesan and PKR's S Manikumar. Thirteen independent candidates also joined the fray.

8.04am: The polling stations opened at Bukit Gantang at 8am after nine days of campaigning. 

There are 55,562 voters in the Bukit Gantang by-election and its main contenders are Barisan Nasional's Ismail Saffian and Pas' Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin. The independent candidate is Kamarul Ramizu Idris.
