KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 17): Datuk Aminuddin Md Hanafiah, who is the Tambun Umno division chief (Barisan Nasional), will relinquish his position as director of Majuperak Holdings Bhd if he wins the Tambun parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15).

"If I were elected as a full-time MP, I wouldn't be holding a post in the company. There might be issues that need my attention and I don't want to be bothered by my position in the company.

"I [also] don't want any conflict of interest, big or small," the Perak Umno secretary told The Edge when met at Pekan Tanjung Rambutan, a small town in Kinta district, Perak, last Thursday (Nov 10).

He was appointed as independent and non-executive director of Majuperak in May last year. Majuperak, which is involved in property development and facilities management, is a 51.41%-owned subsidiary of Perak State Development Corp.

Aminuddin, who describes himself as a ‘local boy’ from Chemor, is in a four-cornered fight against the PKR-turned-Bersatu incumbent Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Pejuang's Abdul Rahim Tahir.

Interestingly, before he was selected to contest in the Tambun parliamentary seat, Aminuddin was Hulu Kinta assemblyman until he lost to PKR candidate Muhamad Arafat Varisai Mahamad in GE14.

The Tambun seat — one of the hottest seats in Perak — has a total of 160,558 voters, comprising 50.46% female and 49.54% male voters. Most of them (37,321) are in the 21-to-29 age group.

Since this election will feature two great ‘giants’ in Tambun, Anwar and Faizal, Aminuddin still sees his chances to win as an ‘underdog’.

"We will see how the two fight against each other. As an underdog, all the possibilities are there [for me]. Big names like Anwar and Faizal are not guaranteed of winning, because we saw in 2018 (the last election) that many big names lost.

"[But] let us say if Anwar wins in Tambun. Voters will be left behind. Because the MP have to be the local boys. When we talk about flooding, we [locals] know where the area is, what caused the flooding, and so on. Because the locals know what the ‘rakyat’ here is facing," said Aminuddin.

Asked if the corruption scandals of some BN politicians might influence the sentiment of Tambun voters to cast their ballots for the party, Aminuddin said: "It's not as simple as changing clothes."

"Voters cannot associate BN with corruption, corruption is an act of individuals. Think deeper, do not just take the surface," Aminuddin noted.
