KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 12): In conveying his condolences to the family of the late Public Bank Bhd founder and chairman emeritus Tan Sri Dr Teh Hong Piow, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Teh’s passing leaves a big void in the Malaysian banking sector, as well as the country.
“His passing certainly leaves a big void for the Public Bank family, the banking sector and the country,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.
Anwar said his prayers are with Teh’s family, and he hopes they will remain strong following the late banker’s death.
Shortly before trading on Bursa Malaysia closed at 5pm on Monday (Dec 12), Public Bank confirmed Teh’s passing via a statement.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce that our chairman emeritus… passed away peacefully at 10.20am today (Monday) at the age of 92,” Public Bank’s managing director and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tay Ah Lek said in the statement, adding that Teh’s passing is a great loss to the banking group.
“We extend our most heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to Teh’s family,” he added.
Shares in Public Bank finished one sen or 0.23% lower at RM4.40 on Monday, giving the group a market capitalisation of RM85.41 billion.
