Kuala Lumpur (Oct 11): The Malaysian Electoral Roll Analysis Project (MERAP) discovered 25 problems with the current voter registry list.

The problems, divided into those pertaining to non-postal voters and postal voters, included voters above 85 years old, voters with the same name and address, double registration of postal voters' spouse, and spouse of army personnel being converted as army personnel above the maximum recruitment age, among others.

“We discovered far more problems with the electoral roll than originally anticipated,” MERAP director Ong Kian Ming told reporters at the Parliament lobby on Thursday.

Ong also accused the Election Commission of being insincere in its offer to engage constructively regarding problems with the electoral roll, especially after he joined the DAP recently.

He pointed out that two of the six recommendations made by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Electoral Reform - the setting up of a special task force to deal with voters who submit false information and allowing NGOs and political parties to object to the gazetted electoral role - have not been implemented.
